In 2012, Christopher Scherer, a graduate of the University at Buffalo school of architecture, joined his father Richard and uncle Jay in the business, bringing his eye for design and project management skills to the business. Erin Scherer, a graduate of the State University of New York at Geneseo and GIA, soon joined the store as well.
In 1987, Jerome J. Scherer, Sr. purchased an old abandoned gas station across the street in Snyder, and transformed it into the current store and added Snyder’s first concrete parking lot, as reported in the Amherst Bee.
The family tradition blossomed again in the 1970s when Jerome (Jay) Scherer, Jr., a graduate of the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), and Richard Scherer, Sr., a graduate of the Bowman Technical Institute and Gemological Institute of America (GIA), joined their father in 1973 and 1978.
In the fall of 1967, Jerome Sr. relocated the business to Main Street in Amherst, almost directly across the street from the present location.
The tradition continued when H. Jerome’s son, Jerome J. Scherer Sr., took over the business, having worked in the store since the early 1930s.
A family tradition began when Jerome’s son, H. Jerome, a watchmaker and jewelry designer, and daughter, Hildegard, joined the business. H. Jerome’s skills with precision mechanisms were so recognized that he was often called upon to repair some of the tower clocks that dotted the Buffalo skyline.
In February of 1905, Jerome A. Scherer moved the business to a newly constructed store at 1382 Fillmore Avenue near Utica St.
After two years, Jerome A. Scherer opened Scherer’s Jewelers at 312 Masten St. in Buffalo, New York on September 8th, 1903.
Jerome A. Scherer, great-grandfather of the present owner and founder of Scherer’s Jewelers, took a job with a jeweler on Seneca St. in Buffalo. Spurred by a desire to make jewelry, in 1878 he found employment with Heintz Bros, a Buffalo ring manufacturer. With experience and skill, he became their chief diamond setter.
