Jerome A. Scherer, great-grandfather of the present owner and founder of Scherer’s Jewelers, took a job with a jeweler on Seneca St. in Buffalo. Spurred by a desire to make jewelry, in 1878 he found employment with Heintz Bros, a Buffalo ring manufacturer. With experience and skill, he became their chief diamond setter.

A family tradition began when Jerome’s son, H. Jerome, a watchmaker and jewelry designer, and daughter, Hildegard, joined the business. H. Jerome’s skills with precision mechanisms were so recognized that he was often called upon to repair some of the tower clocks that dotted the Buffalo skyline.
